In 2011, CfAT undertook the first national round of case studies of Indigenous self build initiatives. Residents of sixteen small communities and six Indigenous organisations in the NT, WA and Queensland who had been involved in ‘self-build’ housing projects were interviewed. The aim was to gain an understanding of the conditions and barriers to self-built housing in an environment where housing remains increasingly underfunded and unavailable. The study demonstrated some innovative approaches to housing provision, while emphasising that having access to land and being resourceful and adaptable were crucial elements. The major recommendation from the study was that a ‘resource network’, for sharing stories and information about the aspects of self-build, would help remote self-builders build more safely and sustainably.
