Telecommunications Services
CAT undertakes applied research in telecommunications and related information and technology topics with the aim of supporting Australia's Indigenous communities in three main areas of focus:
- Access to cost effective and reliable products and services
- Achieving sustainable services through a better understanding of the factors that determine their longer term success. This applies to both the provision of the technical infrastructure and service itself and its effective use by the communities
- Integrating Information and Communications technologies (ICTs) into broader strategies aimed at enhancing livelihoods opportunities. These livelihood opportunities - work, health and well-being - may emerge directly within the ICT sector or indirectly through the use of ICT to enable and promote livelihood opportunities in other areas.
Other services provided by CAT in this area include:
- Assistance with selecting and adapting services and products
- Development and delivery of effective training
- Facilitation of ongoing maintenance of services in Indigenous communities
- Evaluation and technical advice
CAT is currently involved with the Department of Broadband, Communications. and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) Community Telephone Project. CAT developed the original prototype community telephone and has provided maintenance, training, verification and monitoring services.
