The Technical Skills Group of CAT is offering Indigenous Australians training in different technical areas.

 Training locations are:

  • Alice Springs CAT Campus, Desert Knowledge Precinct, Desert Peoples Centre, South Stuart Highway
  • Communities within the Northern Territory and bordering states.

We offer full qualifications (see below) but also skills sets which arise from the training needs of a community, family group or an individual learner. A skills set is a combination of skills represented through a number of units of competency from different training packages. Talk to us to find out what best suit your needs!

70118NT Certificate II in Applied Design and Technology and
70123NT Certificate III in Applied Design and Technology

ATWork (Aboriginal Technical Worker)

This is an accredited course with two qualification levels designed by CAT to respond to the big variety of skills needed on remote communities. It consists of units of competency designed by CAT and competencies drawn from different Training Packages. Learners are introduced to the six key areas of applied technology on remote communities: Water, Waste, Communication, Transport, Shelter and Energy. The skills learned will enable you to make informed decisions about adequate technologies for remote communities and undertake daily repair and maintenance work.

AUR10105 Certificate I in Automotive 

Learners are introduced to the automotive/mechanical industry and become familiar with the basics in the area of automotive mechanical principals & systems. Learners will gain skills in using a range of tools & equipment doing maintenance and services on small engines. The qualification is hands on and practical.

AUR20505 Certificate II in Automotive (Vehicle Servicing)

The learners are introduced to the Automotive/Mechanical Industry and become familiar with the basics in the area of automotive mechanical principles & systems. You will gain skills in using a range of tools & equipment to do maintenance and services on engines and vehicles. The qualification is hands on and practical. You will work on a variety of drive trains and associated equipment.

 BCC20107 Certificate II in Civil Construction

You will be developing skills in using a range of hand and power tools also skills involved in levelling sites, taking correct measurements and making calculations as well as handling, storage and disposal of construction materials and waste. Occupational health and safety policies and workplace procedures will be covered as well as personal and tool safety. You will also be developing skills to read and interpret plans and how to organise your work tasks more efficiently and effectively.

 BCC30607 Certificate III in Civil Construction (Plant Operations)

The skills and knowledge acquired in this qualification will enable you to work on a community or for an organisation involving the use of plant and equipment relevant to civil construction. You will be trained to operate a range of plant and equipment suitable for road construction, building sites and repair work. Occupational health and safety policies and workplace procedures will be covered as well as personal and tool safety.

AUR20805 Certificate II in Outdoor Power Equipment

This course provides you with the foundation skills and knowledge to effectively maintain, service and repair a wide range of outdoor power equipment.  The qualification ensures the fundamental knowledge and skills base which is pivotal for looking after an increasing variety of power equipment used in Indigenous communities.  The skills gained enable you to respond to the high rate of technology failure of outdoor power equipment used and operated in often harsh remote localities, far from urban service centres. There are many difficulties involved in maintaining mechanical equipment used in these environments including:

  • poor access to relevant goods and services outlets;
  • high daily demand placed on equipment;
  • extreme environmental and climatic conditions;
  • wide variations in operator skills and knowledge.

 UEE21407 Certificate II in Remote Area Power Supply Maintenance

 You will be able to undertake routine maintenance of remote area power supplies consisting of

  • Battery banks;
  • Generator sets;
  • Photovoltaic arrays (solar systems);
  • Wind generators.

 This qualification was created primarily for use by, but not exclusive to, Indigenous communities.

ICA10105 Certificate I in Information Technology

The Certificate I in Information Technology enables you to undertake basic ICT (Information and Computer Technology) functions using a personal computer and engaging in basic online activities.  It could be described as Basic ICT literacy". 

This course provides a pathway into the Certificate II in Information Technology.  The unit ICAU1128B Operate a personal computer is a prerequisite for a number of Certificate II units.

ICA20105 Certificate II in Information Technology

 This course provides you with the skills and knowledge to be an effective ICT (Information and Communications Technology) user or employee.  The qualification has a fundamental ICT knowledge and skills base which is pivotal for all other qualifications in ICA05.  The eight core units contain the basic ICT skills and knowledge required for effective entry into all ICA05 qualifications from Certificate III upwards.
